Dragonflies are my spirit animal. I captured this photo and I kid you not, this little guy looked directly at me and my camera for the shot. I feel a connection and a peace when they are present that I can only explain as divine. They seem to always appear at times in my life where I need to open my eyes to the present moment.

So often in life, we zoom through the day to day, never slowing down, stopping to enjoy the moments and realizing what is happening right in front of us.

But not the dragonfly, this one stopped, literally looked me in the eyes, paused for a photo then enjoyed the breeze from the branch for a moment before moving on. I’d like to think that perhaps he was thinking about how beautiful life is…(and how he loves October as much as I do ;))

I wonder, as humans, how often we truly pause. Stop. Breathe. Soak up the sunlight, the breeze, the moment. I know I have to be super conscious of staying in the moment because I love life…I l want to do it all, hear it all, be it all, say it all. But sometimes, it’s necessary to just BE. Sometimes, we don’t need to rush to the next thing, we don’t need to think about the to do list… we just need to BE. There in the moment, with ourselves, with others and soak it up. The moment will never be again!

Here are the top three things that help me stay in the present moment:

  • Log off / turn off all technology for a set time each day.
  • Meditation (I love the app “Insight Timer” — there are TONS of meditations on any topic, level & time you need) and then journal afterward.
  • Do something creative.
  • Laugh!
  • Look the person / people you’re with in the eyes and hold it… it will force you to be present (in a good way of course) and BE there, listening to them and seeing them.
